2 latest treatment of hypertension

What is the treatment of hypertension:Treating hypertension requires commitment by both the patient and health provider. Unless the cause is known and treatable, hypertension management is for life. Requires careful selection of drugs or combination of drugs depending on the response. Also monitoring of the bp to determine if the drug regime being used is producing positive results. Other conditions like diabetes melitus should be checked as it maybe the cause to treatment failure or causing vascular rigidity leading to hypertension.

1.Medical Treatment of hypertension

The following are drugs used to treat hypertension;

A. Calcium Channel Blockers

Calcium channel blockers are drugs used to lower blood pressure. They work by slowing the movement of calcium into the cells of the heart and blood vessel walls, which makes it easier for the heart to pump and widens blood vessels. What is the treatment of hypertension

  • Nifedipine (Procardia, Procardia XL, Adalat CC, Afeditab)
  • amlodipine (Norvasc)
  • amlodipine and atorvastatin (Caduet)
  • amlodipine and benazepril (Lotrel)
  • amlodipine and valsartan (Exforge)
  • amlodipine and telmisartan (Twynsta)
  • amlodipine and olmesartan (Azor)
  • amlodipine and olmesartan and hydrochlorothiazide (Tribenzor)
  • amlodipine and aliskiren (Tekamlo has been discontinued in the US)
  • amlodipine and aliskiren and hydrochlorothiazide (Amturnide has been discontinued in the US)
  • amlodipine and perindopril (Prestalia)

  • nimodipine (Nimotop has been discontinued in the US)
  • nisoldipine (Sular)
  • verapamil (Calan

B. ACE Inhibitors

Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are high blood pressure drugs that widen or dilate your blood vessels to improve the amount of blood your heart pumps and lower blood pressure.

  • enalapril (Vasotec)
  • captopril (Capoten)
  • lisinopril (Zestril and Prinivil)
  • benazepril (Lotensin)
  • quinapril (Accupril)
  • perindopril (Aceon)
  • ramipril (Altace)
  • trandolapril (Mavik)
  • fosinopril (Monopril)
  • moexipril (Univasc)

C. Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARBs)

Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) have the same effects as ACE inhibitors, another type of blood pressure drug, but work by a different mechanism.

  • losartan (Cozaar)
  • irbesartan (Avapro)
  • valsartan (Diovan)
  • candesartan (Atacand)
  • olmesartan (Benicar)
  • telmisartan (Micardis)
  • eprosartan (Teveten)
  • azilsartan (Edarbi)

D. Diuretics (Water Pills)

Diuretics, commonly known as “water pills,” help your body get rid of unneeded water and salt through the urine. Getting rid of excess salt and fluid helps lower blood pressure and can make it easier for your heart to pump.

Thiazide diuretics

Thiazides are the most commonly prescribed diuretics. They’re most often used to treat high blood pressure. These drugs not only decrease fluids, they also cause your blood vessels to relax.

Thiazides are sometimes taken with other medications used to lower blood pressure. Examples of thiazides include:

  • chlorthalidone
  • hydrochlorothiazide (Microzide)
  • metolazone
  • indapamide

Loop diuretics

Loop diuretics are often used to treat heart failure. Examples of these drugs include:

  • torsemide (Demadex)
  • furosemide (Lasix)
  • bumetanide

Potassium-sparing diuretics

Potassium-sparing diuretics reduce fluid levels in your body without causing you to lose potassium, an important nutrient.

The other types of diuretics cause you to lose potassium, which can lead to health problems such as arrhythmia. Potassium-sparing diuretics may be prescribed for people at risk of low potassium levels, such as those who take other medications that deplete potassium.

Potassium-sparing diuretics don’t reduce blood pressure as well as the other types of diuretics do. Therefore, your doctor may prescribe a potassium-sparing diuretic with another medication that also lowers blood pressure.

Examples of potassium-sparing diuretics include:

  • amiloride
  • triamterene (Dyrenium)
  • spironolactone (Aldactone)
  • eplerenone (Inspra)

E. Beta-Blockers

Beta-blockers are drugs used to treat high blood pressure. They block the effects of the sympathetic nervous system on the heart.

  • acebutolol (Sectral)
  • atenolol (Tenormin)
  • betaxolol (Kerlone has been discontinued)
  • Bisoprolol fumarate (Zebeta)
  • carteolol (Cartrol, discontinued)
  • carvedilol (Coreg)
  • esmolol (Brevibloc)
  • labetalol (Trandate [Normodyne – discontinued])
  • metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL)
  • nadolol (Corgard)
  • nebivolol (Bystolic)
  • penbutolol (Levatol has been discontinued)
  • pindolol (Visken, discontinued)
  • propranolol (Hemangeol, Inderal LA Inderal XL, InnoPran XL)
  • timolol (Blocadren, discontinued) treatment of hypertension

Depending on your age and other medical conditions these drugs maybe indicated or contraindicate. Please consult with your clinician always.

2.Diet and lifestyle
